Mary McKenna

Entrepreneur & Investor - Northern Irish Technology & Angel

Mary McKenna is a Northern Irish technology entrepreneur and angel investor.  She co-founded and built successful Derry based online learning company Learning Pool on the back of a long public sector career and by using her own extensive network.  Mary exited Learning Pool this summer in order to move back firmly into startup land.

Mary is interested in helping start and grow indigenous Irish tech companies and especially in working with very young entrepreneurs.  She has been Chairman of Northern Ireland’s Digital Circle since 2010, representing the digital content industry fuelling economic recovery, and earlier this year helped national youth volunteering charity, vInspired, to launch Task Squad, a brand new Google backed social innovation platform around microworking for 18-25 year olds.

Mary has just joined Northern Ireland Science Park as one of their Entrepreneurs in Residence and is looking forward to working with some exciting new startup companies through that channel.

Outside of work Mary has been a Non Executive Director of Derry’s Millennium Forum & Theatre for over 10 years and she’s also a trustee of the London based charity, Social Care Institute for Excellence.

In the 2014 New Year’s Honours Mary was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for services to digital technology, innovation and learning.
